FHCG was conceptualized by a core group of motivated neighbors who saw the potential to turn an empty plot of land into an amazing opportunity. Formerly residential, the land located in the southwest corner of Hammond, IN was acquired by the Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission and the Army Corp of Engineers through eminent domain. The Little Calumet River flows through the back of the property near the treeline and extensive work was successfully done by those entities to keep it from flooding. That ended in 2017 and the garden was put into motion in 2018.
Once the garden was established as a domestic nonprofit corporation, the Board was able to set their plan in motion. Plots were built and members recruited. The garden was solely funded through member dues. Today, we are fully recognized as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and solicit donations and fundraise as a supplement to member donations.
The grounds are maintained through the Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission and we have operational support through the City of Hammond. All labor for the garden is conducted through volunteers. If you're interested in helping out please contact us at fhcg2017@gmail.com. There are differing levels of commitment based on your gardening interests!
